Introduction to Oils

This course begins with practical aspects of using oil painting materials including types of brushes, paints, mediums, palettes and supports. You will be introduced to techniques such as scumbling and glazing. As you gain confidence with handling the paint there will be increasing focus on broader aspects of painting, particularly colour. We will explore how colour relates to tone, how colours relate to each other, how to see and describe colour, how colour works in a painting and how to mix any colour you want. You may even make some fascinating discoveries about how our brains and eyes work! (Although we’re using oils, you will learn much that is applicable to any medium, style or subject matter.)
This course is suitable for complete beginners or for those with some basic drawing
or painting experience; small class size means that each participant can develop
confidence and skills at a pace that’s both stimulating and rewarding.

Come and Try Oil Painting

This three hour session will give you a glimpse of the activities and skills covered in our longer Oil Painting courses. During the afternoon you will be introduced to basic oil painting materials and begin to explore the unique effects, techniques and qualities of oils. Have a try, and see if it’s what you have been looking for before committing to a longer course.

Oil Painting for Beginners

This course offers further exploration of aspects of oil painting including colour and composition.  Stimulating activities and discussion will help students develop their individual skills and creative initiative at their own pace, together with insight into the world of "great" paintings.

This course is suitable for complete beginners or for those with some basic drawing
or painting experience; small class size means that each participant can develop
confidence and skills at a pace that’s both stimulating and rewarding.

This course is suitable for those who have completed Intro to Oil Painting previously with Active Art Studios.

Approaches to Oils

This is a ten week open studio course and is designed for people with some painting experience or students who have done a previous Active Art Studios painting course such as Introduction to Oils or Oil Painting for Beginners. Students will be expected to come with their own subject matter and ideas as well as canvas and materials.  You will work at your own pace on self-directed painting/s with assistance from the tutor. Prepare to be stimulated, encouraged and challenged!

**NOTE:This course does not include course materials. A materials list will be provided to students on enrolment and cost of materials is dependant on the size of the self-directed work you wish to undertake.
