Crash Course in Resin Jewellery*

This is a brief introduction to working with Resin to create your own unique jewellery. We will be using pre-formed plastic moulds and casting resin to create our one of a kind works of wearable art.

Students will be encouraged to bring along their own images and small objects to embed in their resin pieces. This is a very short introduction to working with resin where students will come away with a number of finished works.

Our longer course includes details on different kinds of resin and also mould making which is the secret to creating really unique pieces. Trust me, once you get the jewellery making bug you won't want to stop. Enrol now for this quick fix of creative jewellery making heaven!

Ever wanted to print your own t-shirt? Then this is the course for you! Learn how to stencil and screen print t-shirts for yourself or your friends. Its easy and fun, and no one else will have a wardrobe like yours! PLEASE NOTE: NO DRAWING SKILLS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS COURSE. Stencils and screens can be created from text  or images printed from your computer. Of course original drawings and designs are most welcome!!

Printmaking has a load of fantastic applications for clothing, fashion and fabric. All you need to do is bring your ideas and your own t-shirts to create a fantastic, new, individually created wardrobe of wearable art.

Sculpture for Beginners

This simple beginners class is suitable for those who have never worked in 3 D before. Get a feel for working in three dimensions using a wire armature (base) and this simple plaster technique. Once finished with a lovely bronze or iron patina you won't believe these sculptures are made of simple plaster. When sealed properly plaster can be left outside, so come and make something unique and interesting to complement your garden.

The tutor will assist you in all aspects of sculpture, from choosing subject matter to technical advice on how to build the shape and form you desire. Examples will be given to inspire and enthuse each participant.

Don't be constrained by the flat page, plumb the inner depths of your creativity and create a living and breathing sculpture.  The world is better in 3-D!!

Come and Try - Mixed Media Drawing and Collage

This three hour 'Come and Try' session will give you the opportunity to try drawing with a variety of media and see what it's all about. If you want to 'have a go' then this is the class for you . Come and give it a whirl. No prior knowledge assumed. A great way to get back into drawing and making art this class gives you the opportunity to try a large cross section of media and a number of different techniques to broaden your skill base.

Come and Try Printmaking

Students will gain an introduction to basic printmaking techniques and an understanding of positive and negative space. Students will come away with a small hand cut stamp and stencil to print with. Screen printing will be demonstrated so students can understand this process and it's applications for printing on fabrics, t- shirts and clothing.

This three hour 'Come and Try' session will give you the opportunity to try small scale sculpture. If you would like to try working in three dimensions and create a small work, this class is for you. You will make a small sculpture to take home with you at the end of the session. Come and give it a whirl and see how you go. Mosaic Madness

A great way for beginners to sample mosaics, this intensive course introduces students to a number of different techniques for creating original mosaic works suitable for indoor and outdoor use. This course covers both reverse and direct methods for making mosaics and introduces the student to  'pique assiette' and using recycled materials.

You will complete a small project under the direction of the tutor. This course is suitable for beginners and for teachers wanting professional development in the arts area.

Resin Jewellery (Long Course)*

This class will allow you gain the skills required to make funky jewellery using liquid casting resin. Liquid casting resin can be used to create pendants, beads, bracelets and rings from pre formed moulds or from moulds you can make yourself.

This course WILL INCLUDE MOULD MAKING which is the secret to creating your own one off original pieces like no one else. Step into the jewellery making frenzy which comes once you get a feel for  making great, original one off pieces of wearable art. This is an 7 week course to allow students to create pieces from pre-made moulds and also make your  own simple moulds and cast with them.

Figure Drawing for Beginners

Students will learn the basics of figure drawing  for four classes through practical approaches to drawing the figure.  Students will then be prepared to join the open life drawing sessions on Thursday evenings having learnt some ways of approach to drawing from life.

This course will cover the fundamental elements of composition and proportion as well as different methods of approach and materials for drawing the figure.

Students will be encouraged to look at other artists and also be given examples from the tutors own work and from art history to assist them in their approach to the figure. On completion of this course students will have gained the confidence to attend untutored life drawing classes where they can put what they have learned into practice.

Sculpting the Head for Beginners

In this new class you will learn the basic skills necessary  to make a  bust of the head and shoulders. No prior knowledge is assumed and this class is suitable for the complete beginner. Topics covered include proportion, anatomy and decorative finishes and patinas. Clay will be the medium used over a newspaper based (which burns out in the kiln) Clay is easy to alter and adjust when first learning to create in 3D.

Busts will be fired after completion of the course and then be available for pick up, or you can take them home unfired. Course fee includes enough materials for one life size bust. Why not create your own self portrait or simply grasp the techniques of working with clay to create a human image. Don't forget the world is better in 3-D!

LIFE DRAWING

Life drawing classes are now on at Active Art Studios. These classes are UNTUTORED and anyone can come along and have a go. You must bring your own materials. We have 7 easels so 'first in, best dressed' for who gets those. Otherwise bring a drawing pad you can rest on your knee or the table.

Thursdays 6.30pm - 9.30pm $25 or 4 sessions for $88

There will be no session Easter Thursday.

Introduction to Oils

This course begins with practical aspects of using oil painting materials including types of brushes, paints, mediums, palettes and supports. You will be introduced to techniques such as scumbling and glazing. As you gain confidence with handling the paint there will be increasing focus on broader aspects of painting, particularly colour. We will explore how colour relates to tone, how colours relate to each other, how to see and describe colour, how colour works in a painting and how to mix any colour you want. You may even make some fascinating discoveries about how our brains and eyes work! (Although we’re using oils, you will learn much that is applicable to any medium, style or subject matter.)

Mixed Media Drawing and Collage

In this 4 week course you will learn how to create interesting effects by exploring a combination of different materials including pastels, charcoal, acrylic paints, paint mediums, ink, ink wash and crayon resist, papers and found objects.

A great all round course that will introduce you to a large number of media and how to use them as well as stretching your brain cells with a variety of drawing techniques.

Classes will be structured in two parts, with the first half consisting of a number of drawing excercises using a particular medium each week. The second half of the session will concentrate on a long drawing excercise using the medium of the week. Much of the time will be spent learning how to experiment and play with the materials to create intriguing results.

Suitable for complete beginners or those with some drawing experience.
